Intensity and teamwork was key to great week

This week was simply amazing for our physical workouts.  Everyone learned a little bit more about themselves if they chose to do so.  My knee was feeling better, and I am very happy to know that there is no major issues in the knee.  There may be a small tear, but the inflammation can be controlled.

I have opened myself to working very closely with some of our more advanced students.  When I say that I mean that they have been open to working with me.  In fact it has been a very real team effort.  Sharing / Teamwork is key to the advancement of every student, including myself.

I hope that what we felt this week in our workouts will continue and grow.  It is not enough to have a short burst of “greatness”.  It is our goal is to be awesome most of the time.  It is our goal to set the bar for others and the example.  In the book “Talent is Overrated”, the author demonstrates time after time that to master something it must be practiced deliberately a lot.  Like 10,000 hours, a lot.

Now while most of us may not be willing to devote that amount of time to the martial arts we can devote that amount of time to being better people, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends, associates.  Here is an interesting calculation.  If we devoted 2 hours a day, 6 days a week to being a better person, to understanding our selves and our weaknesses, and then strengthening those areas, it would only take 16 years to master that (based on 10,000 hours).

So I have to ask myself, what are my weaknesses that if I worked on would make me better person?  What am I doing to work on those areas of weakness?  How will sharing help me improve as a person?  What fears are holding me back?  Oh maybe a more basic question.  What is a ‘better’ person?  better than what, who?
