Sunday thoughts

Today was a very hot day, but I was able to meditate in the morning, and then spend an hour or so in the garden.  Today’s time in the garden was especially thought provoking for me.  I really appreciate the amount of food we have been able to grow as well as the variety of food.

Today I was able to pick tomatoes, squash, zuccini, cucumbers, banana peppers, green beans, beets, carrots (although that was a little early).  After gathering them, doing some weeding we prepared them and put them on the grill to cook for this week coming.  Then an act of kindness: we bagged some up for the neighbors and then put them out in the driveway with a sign: Veggies Take what you can use.

Neighbors came by, picked up some veggies and all left with a great smile.  When I was in Kenya so many had smiles for us, yet most had so little.  The children we visited had porridge every morning and for dinner a mixture of beans and maize with a potato every once in a while, every day for lunch and dinner.  Yet they smile knowing that they will have a meal, an education and some time with their friends.

When it comes down to what makes us happy, for me it is in the relationships and the friendships that we have.  Building those relationships is one of the most important things that we can do.
